How we design our formulas.

A look at our development, testing and traceability.

By the time our products are in your hands, they have been on quite a journey. From formulation to packaging design to testing at every stage of development, our quest to provide above-and-beyond quality means our products emerge tried, tested, validated for conformity and true.

Since most development and manufacturing take place at our facilities in Montreal, we are uniquely positioned to be hands-on and involved. We do not rest until we have created a skin or beauty product that is gentle, effective, safe and a pleasure to use.

Meet our tests.

  • Stability testing
  • Safety testing
  • Efficacy testing

Stability testing

Test description

This test evaluates the stability of our products towards external factors such as temperature variation, light exposure and time. All our creams, lotions, gels, eye makeup removers, cleansers, lipsticks, glosses, mascaras, eyeliners and more are exposed to extreme temperatures from -25 to 50 °C.

Why do we do it? To ensure that each formula is stable, can resist extreme temperature variations and meets our expectations for shelf life durability. We want to guarantee that by the time the product reaches you, it is still at its best.

Safety testing

Compatibility Test

We do not just check that our formulas perform, but also that they are compatible with various types of packaging.

Why do we do it? Because some ingredients might react negatively to certain materials over time, so we are vigilant in our packaging choices.

Safety testing

Antimicrobial Efficacy Test

This test applies to every one of our products containing water. It allows us to evaluate the performance of the preservative system by deliberately injecting high amounts of bacteria, yeast and mold into the product.

Why do we do it? In normal use conditions, external factors can contaminate the product. Therefore, we want to ensure that the preservative system of the formula will prevent and halt the growth of microbes.

Safety testing

Human Repeat Insult Patch Test (HRIPT)

This clinical study determines the potential for irritation, sensitivity and allergic reactions caused by product contact. It is carried out by repeatedly applying patches containing the product on the skin of study volunteers. This test is performed on every single Marcelle product under the supervision of a dermatologist.

Why do we do it? So that we can ensure a product meets our standards and prove that it is hypoallergenic and tested under dermatological control.

Safety testing

Non-Comedogenic Evaluation

This clinical study is conducted to evaluate the potential for the development of comedones after the product is applied to subjects. It is carried out under the supervision of a dermatologist.

Why do we do it? By ensuring the number of comedones does not increase, we prove that our product is non-comedogenic and has been tested under dermatological control.

Safety testing

Ophthalmological Evaluation

This clinical study evaluates a product’s potential to cause irritation to the skin around the eyes. It is carried out under the supervision of an ophthalmologist on all Marcelle eye products. We take care to include volunteers with contact lenses and sensitive eyes.

Why do we do it? By ensuring the product does not cause irritation, we prove that our product is suitable for contact lens wearers and sensitive eyes and has been tested under ophthalmological control. Therefore, we ensure the product is safe and gentle for the eye.

Safety testing

Stinging Test for sensitive skin

This clinical study determines if a product is well tolerated by people with sensitive skin. The test is carried out on volunteers with skin that is easily irritated by lactic acid, a standard indicator of skin sensitivity.

Why do we do it? To ensure our products are suitable for people with sensitive skin.

Efficacy testing

Elasticity and Firmness Evaluation

This clinical study is conducted to compare the elasticity and firmness of the skin before and after product use.

Why do we do it? To measure the efficacy of any product stating an improvement of firmness and elasticity.

Efficacity testing

Moisturization Evaluation

This clinical study is conducted to measure the hydration of the skin before and after product use.

Why do we do it? To prove our product helps moisturize the skin.

Efficacity testing

Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) Evaluation

This clinical study is conducted to evaluate a product’s protective capacity of the cutaneous barrier before and after use. After one hour and again after 24 hours, water evaporation from the applied area is measured and compared to water evaporation before product application.

Why do we do it? To prove the product helps protect and reinforce the skin barrier.

Efficacity testing

Anti-Wrinkle Evaluation

This clinical study is conducted to compare the length and depth of wrinkles before and after product use.

Why do we do it? To measure the efficacy of a product stating a reduction in wrinkles.

Efficacity testing

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) Evaluation

This clinical study is conducted to measure the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of a product with sunscreen. The SPF indicates the level of protection from UV rays provided by the product.

Why do we do it? To ensure our products that contain sunscreen provide effective sun protection.

Our traceability.

We know where our products are going, and we are committed to knowing where the ingredients and components we use are from.

All ingredients we select must comply with our quality and safety standards.

All ingredients with a named source (for instance, Canadian Glacier water) are traced to ensure the claim is accurate.

All products are sealed, shrink-wrapped or boxed for your safety. Each product features a code called a lot number that allows us to trace the packaging, manufacturing and ingredient sourcing, including information like manufacturing date, location, operators, formulators, and so on.

All products are carefully monitored in transit to their points of sale.

One of our most valued resources is you—comments and feedback from our customers play an essential role in shaping the future of our products. Your shared experiences help us modify and evolve our formulas to better suit your needs. Together, we are building the best version of our brand!
