The Effects of Fragrances on Your Skin

Why Marcelle products are 100% fragrance free

Fragrances: Hidden Chemicals

There is no question that an alluring scent can help sell a product, whether it's a cosmetic or even a household cleaning product. Unfortunately, those nose-friendly fragrances are anything but friendly when it comes to your skin.

The fragrances used to give cosmetics their pleasant scent are complex and often comprised of several different chemicals, many of which have been found to cause everything from allergic reactions to cancer. The results of laboratory tests performed by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and published in a report by Environmental Defence Canada found that many popular fragrances not only contain dozens of chemicals, but also are “secret” and not listed on many product labels. This means that even those with known allergies or sensitivities may experience symptoms when they believe they’re being diligent about choosing safe products.

Fragrance's Effects on Your Skin

There are as many as 3,000 chemicals being used as fragrances in not only perfumes, but also in most of the beauty and personal care products on the market. Many of these chemicals have yet to be tested for toxicity and include known hormone-disrupting chemicals and carcinogens.

Fragrances can trigger allergies, migraines, and even asthma. Even if you don’t suffer from any of these conditions, they can still pose potentially serious health risks when they come in contact with your skin. Contact dermatitis, also known as contact eczema, is a fairly common side effect of fragrances. This can cause your skin to develop a red, itchy rash that can be quite painful and even blister and become infected, depending on the severity of your reaction to the product. Those who use certain products regularly increase their risk of experiencing a severe reaction and suffering from chronic skin disorders, such as eczema.

Though not everyone will experience a reaction to fragrances, studies have found that fragrance sensitization is a bigger problem than you may think. A review published in the British Journal of Dermatology in 2009 concluded that there is a significant prevalence of fragrance sensitization in the general population.

Learn to Avoid the Harmful Effects of Fragrances

Even with issues such as undisclosed ingredients and complex combinations of chemicals in fragrances, there are things that you can do to protect your skin’s health. Be aware of your allergies and sensitivities, including any known triggers so that you can avoid them. Even if you don’t suffer from any known allergies, choosing products that are hypoallergenic and fragrance free will help you prevent a potentially uncomfortable skin reaction.

Marcelle never uses fragrances in any of its products and continues to provide hypoallergenic and fragrance-free options, helping you look beautiful without compromising your health.
