It’s important to establish a proper skin care routine when targeting specific goals. A dermatologist would tell you that the first step to healthy skin is clean hands. Make sure you wash your hands with soap first before touching any of your skin care products. Then the next thing to do is to start by cleaning the skin, since ingredients work more effectively on a clean epidermis. It is critical to remove any trace of makeup at night and gently rid your skin of sebum, sweat and environmental dust. A mild facial cleanser suffices in the morning. Always pat the skin dry with a clean washcloth and avoid rubbing it dry.
How to layer skin care products
There is an order in which moisturizers or skin care products in general should be layered: lightest (water-like texture) to heaviest (oil-based or sun protection). Not everyone enjoys layering, but for the sake of the argument, let’s see how it’s done:
*If your moisturizer contains sun protection, no need to add another layer – it will not provide more protection.

Additionally, the spray formulas provide a cool and refreshing sensation. They are very easy to use because they are applied directly to the face and neck (avoiding contact with the eyes – no need to waste a cotton pad. You may also spray the mist into the palm of your hands and then dab the liquid onto the face and neck afterwards for a more precise application.
The benefits of using a serum
Generally, serums are light in texture, penetrating the skin rapidly. Their formula, however; usually contains a higher concentration of active ingredients, working in synergy to reinforce the moisturizer and deliver accelerated results. Their lightweight texture absorbs rapidly to begin working in seconds, helping to improve the skin more efficiently.
The best way to apply a serum
Drop the suggested amount of serum on your fingertips and dab it onto your skin. Avoid massaging the serum in your skin. Use gentle patting motions until the serum is well absorbed.
The difference between eye and face creams
The skin around the eyes is thinner and more sensitive. So, yes, without question, we really do need separate eye and face creams. Unless the directions specify that it is safe for the eye contour, a face cream should not be applied near the eyes. This also holds true for any hand lotion or body moisturizer: do not apply them near the eyes. Certain ingredients in face, hand and body moisturizers have larger molecules (for example, sun protection, nourishing vegetable oils or moisture barriers). If the larger molecules are applied on the skin first, they will prevent the smaller ones from being absorbed and working their magic under your eyes. Eye care is often formulated with ingredients that have smaller molecules, penetrating the skin rapidly and easily. Using products which are not specifically designed for eye contour can result overnight in puffiness, irritation and redness. Long-term effects can include eczema and milia (whiteheads or tiny white bumps that appear on the skin, often in small groups. Unlike whitehead pimples, milia do not cause redness or pain, but they won’t go away.) When products that are too heavy are regularly used around the eye contour, it can result in clogged pores, and possibly milia.

Add only one new product every two weeks to your regimen. This will allow you to see if your skin is reacting in any way to the product before adding something new in the mix.
Once you have selected your skin care products, stick to the routine for a minimum of six weeks. Skin care products are not overnight fixes – superficial results can usually be seen within the first seven to ten days, however; actual changes in the skin will take up to 6 weeks. Bear in mind that, at their best, skin cells take a full 28 day-cycle to rejuvenate themselves. Give them at least that to start showing the effects of your efforts.
Consistency is key. Some products are used once a day, some twice daily. Stick to the plan for best results.
Lukewarm water is the way to go. Cold water in the morning can give you a feeling of being properly awaken, but it can also irritate your skin. If you turn the dial too much on your hot water tap, it can cause redness and inflammation. Favour lukewarm water, a touch colder than warmer. Washing your face over the sink instead of in the shower will help keep things on the cooler side.
Include your neck in your skin care routine too. Clean, exfoliate, apply serum, moisturize and use sun protection on that area as it is often just as exposed to the elements as the rest of your face.
Get your beauty sleep! A full night of sleep (according to your natural circadian rhythm, it can vary from 6 to 9 hours daily) will help your body’s largest organ, the skin, do its work. It also proves effective against dark circles.
For less cracks, sleep on your backs. Sleeping on your back will avoid unnecessary squishing of the skin against the pillow. The creases and wrinkles caused by a pillow repeatedly, and for hours on end, pressing on the skin are there to stay.
