Your daily skin care routine is most likely what you start and end your day with. Washing your face seems simple enough, just massage in some cleanser and rinse it off, right? Well, turns out that’s not exactly true… You could actually be making one or some of these key mistakes each time you wash your face. Continuously following the wrong face washing habits could lead to several skin issues like irritation, oiliness, dryness, breakouts and even premature aging. Here are the key mistakes to avoid when it comes to washing your face:
1. Washing too frequently
A common misconception when it comes to washing your face is that the more frequently you wash, the cleaner and clearer your skin will become. Actually, washing more than twice a day can lead to irritation and other skin issues. If you wash too often, you can strip the skin of its natural oils, which, in turn, will cause more oil to be produced.
Wash your face only twice a day: morning and night. Your body produces oil overnight, so by washing your face in the morning, you will cleanse your skin of that excess oil. An evening skin care routine is essential as you will need to remove any makeup, dirt, oil and environmental pollutants on your skin.
2. Using a cleanser that’s not adapted to my skin type
When it comes to choosing the right cleanser, always remember that it has two main functions: cleanse your skin and be suitable for your skin type.
The right cleanser will remove any traces of makeup and bacteria. Each time you wash your face, ensure that it’s doing its job properly. The most obvious signs it’s time to change up your cleansing routine are shiny skin, irritation, excessive breakouts, tightness, and constant redness. We recommend using the Marcelle Biodegradable Makeup Removing Cleansing Cloths for your skin type as a first step to removing any makeup and surface irritations before continuing with a second deeper cleanse.
If you’re not sure how to tell if it’s time to look for a new cleanser, keep your eye out for the development of any of these five signs:
3. Wrong water temperature
Lukewarm water is the way to go! Cold water may wake you up in the morning, but it can cause your skin to become irritated while hot water can cause redness and inflammation. Washing your face over the sink with lukewarm water is perfect for a gentle cleanse.
An important step in your skin care routine is exfoliation as it helps to remove dead skin cells. Just keep in mind that it is possible to over-exfoliate! Avoid using scrubs more than twice a week as you risk aggravating your skin. Opt for a gentle scrub that will leave your skin feeling clean and hydrated.
5. Don’t forget your neck!
An important step in your skin care routine is exfoliation as it helps to remove dead skin cells. Just keep in mind that it is possible to over exfoliate! Avoid using scrubs more than twice a week as you risk aggravating your skin. Opt for a gentle scrub that will leave your skin feeling clean and hydrated.
6. Pat dry, don’t rub
The key is to pat your face dry after washing instead of rubbing. Even though rubbing may seem easier and more soothing, it tugs and pulls on your skin, putting its elastin at risk. Use a clean and soft face towel, as dirty ones carry bacteria, which can lead to blemishes and clogged pores.
7. No moisturizer follow-up
Post-cleanse is the perfect time to follow up with serum and moisturizer for the best absorption. Applying it when your skin is freshly clean and damp is best! This will maximize absorption and help seal it in.
Focus on properly cleansing your face without harming your skin by avoiding these common mistakes. By following the right skin care routine, you’ll help your skin stay visibly clean and healthy. Avoid over-exfoliating, washing too frequently, and rubbing your face dry. Instead, choose the right cleanser for your skin type, cleanse thoroughly, use lukewarm water, and pat dry to keep your skin in the best shape possible.
