  • Eyebrow shaping: a guide to beautiful brows

    Posted on 05/07/2011 by Ariel

Misunderstood, and too often neglected, the eyebrows consistently do not get the attention they deserve. First and foremost, grooming our eyebrows appears to be a time consuming and often painful procedure; is it worth all the tweezing and plucking? The quick answer is ‘yes’, absolutely! If done correctly and often, taking care of our eyebrows can be relatively quick and painless!

The eyebrows play an important part in the over-all appearance of our face. They add definition to the eyes, a frame that can make our eyes appear more open, bigger as well as larger. The shape of our eyebrows also adds personality to our overall image; you can achieve a natural yet sophisticated look to a look of disdain (too thin, too arched) or (shudder) an unkempt, bushy, wild look! So, I’m guessing most of you would like to go with a natural yet sophisticated look that really enhances both the eyes and the face. Make-up artists call this the ‘ideal’ eyebrow shape.

Here’s how it works. The eyebrow is made up of three distinct parts:
    A- The Inclination
    B- Apex
    C- Tail

As you can see from the illustration above, it shows you where the beginning (A- inclination), middle (B- apex) and end (C- tail) of your eyebrow should be.

The inclination is the thickest part of the brow and should start at the tear duct. The apex is the highest point of the arch and should be about two thirds outwards from your starting point (align it with the outer edge of your iris) and the tail is the slope down to the outer corners of your eyes.

Now, before you begin getting your eyebrows in shape – here are the three essential tools you will need: tweezers, manicure scissors and an eyebrow comb/brush.

There are 3 different kinds of tweezers:
    1) Pointed tip: for short or ingrown hairs
    2) Slanted tip: this is my first choice when using tweezers as it has the best grip and control.
    3) Square tip: for coarse hair, it pulls out many hairs at once.

First using your eyebrow brush, sweep half the eyebrow hair upwards (the inclination) and the other half (the tail) downwards, trim the excess that goes beyond the natural hair line using your manicure scissors. This alone makes your eyebrows look clean and neat.

Always remember to err on the side of caution; you never want to take off too much hair in case it creates gaps when you brush the hair back down.

Second, start plucking! Pull the skin tight as this will lessen any discomfort. Always pull starting at the root, and in the direction of the hair growth.

    A couple of pointers:

  • The best time to tweeze your brows is right after you’ve taken a shower. Your pores are more open, so there is little discomfort.
  • Try not to over pluck - always follow the natural shape of your eyebrow.
  • If you should end up with gaps either from trimming or tweezing, no worries! You can fix the situation by filling the gaps with an eyebrow pencil and then blending in the color.
  • Use an eyebrow pencil to define your eyebrows; this will enhance the impact of your eyes – a must for evenings out.
  • When choosing an eyebrow pencil color, your best bet is to complement your hair color.
  • The Marcelle Accent Eyebrow Crayon comes with a small round brush attached that you can use to diffuse and blend eyebrow pencil color.

Well groomed and shaped eyebrows will enhance not only your eyes, but your entire face. The converse is also true; no amount of expensive make-up can hide the impact of neglected and over-run eyebrows. And the best part of this is, the more consistent you are in maintaining your beautiful brow, the easier and faster the routine becomes!

  • Professional Make-Up Artist: A New Face on the Web

    Posted on 21/04/2011 by isabelp

The make-up industry is one which certainly isn't lacking talented workers. Passion flares in the eyes of the artists who get a chance to be paid to put colours to their brushes and enhance beauty or create art on a facial canvas. Although artists usually appreciate the recognition of their art and the exposure it brings to their creations, they are not necessarily at ease in front of a camera. We needed to find a professional make-up artist who could do both. Over and above, our artist had to be able to communicate in Canada's two official languages. And then we met Ariel.

    Ariel

Born and raised in Montreal, Ariel first got into makeup when she first started learning to draw. "I used to give my Barbies makeovers' in marker: red lips, green eyeshadow", she tells us. " It went on to elementary school were I use to be one of the only girls sporting pink lip gloss and sparkles; and then in high school I used to give my friends makeovers, or help them with their make-up if they were going on a date. I really love making people feel beautiful and confident." It wasn't long before we saw a special sparkle in her eyes when we started discussing make-up and playing with products. Then we turned on the camera, and she glowed.

Ariel seriously got involved in make-up and decided to make a career out of it after high school when she enrolled at Edith Serei Academy, studying fashion, photography and special effects makeup.

With no further ado, we are proud to introduce Ariel, our professional make-up artist who will be providing tips for women of all ages.

  • Fashionista Challenge: shopping on a budget

    Posted on 23/03/2011 by isabelp

Late last month we introduced the Fashionista Challenge in collaboration with a mommy blogger, Fedwa Lahlou. On her mat-leave budget and still desiring to fulfill her trendy fashion needs, she decided to put a few Montreal fashionistas to the test! The budget: $100 for a complete look. The shoes are the start point and are selected in Fedwa's already-paid-for collection and may also be accompanied by some of her personal accessories (jewelry or purse). Then the mommy blogger and fashionista go clothes shopping and when the cash register rings at the end of the day, it can’t exceed $100. A full new look every month for $100. Sometimes to work, sometimes to play, sometimes to go out on the town. Say yes to the Fashionista Challenge!

  • Fashionista Challenge for a hot mamma

    Posted on 25/02/2011 by isabelp

A short while ago, I was attending a conference filled with mom bloggers in the audience. One of them came to me and recognized me from my Twitter picture. Everyone gets their 3 seconds of fame, right? I assume this was mine. Nevertheless, we started chit chatting and she discovered I was there representing Marcelle. She obviously knew the brand and she's a cosmetic lover! The first minute I engaged in a conversation with Fedwa, what struck me was her utmost feminity. She exudes womanliness. Mother, lover, and shoe-aholic, she has a contagious smile that turns into a laughter that has the exact same effect. Easy to talk to, she enjoys life, remained very close to her inner child as she developed into a woman, and is absolutely great company. This lady is irresistible! She's also a businesswoman.
