Two young women from the Marcelle® Marketing team are in Sweden for the XIII FINA World Masters Championship, participating in the Synchronized Swimming events.  Amanda and Samantha will be performing with their teammates from Beaconsfield Synchro on August 3rd and August 6th.

This group of eight young women has been training together two to five times a week for over ten years.  Some of them joined the synchro team when they were just eight years old.  They grew up together, became the best of friends and have learned to bring out the best in each other through their individual strengths and weaknesses.  Nine Canadian teams are participating in the 2010 FINA World Masters Championship and Beaconsfield Synchro is confident they can bring home a medal.

Here is a quick preview of one of the routines which will be performed this week in Sweden.  This rehearsal was filmed last April in Beaconsfield (Quebec).

The Beaconsfield Synchro team will be competing on August 3rd with a technical routine, including predetermined moves and specific requirements that each team must include in their program.  The performance will be judged on technical abilities and skill level.  The second competition will take place on August 6th and this long program will demonstrate the team’s artistic talents.  Although they have been working on these two routines for a year already, the swimmers are not tired of their programs.  “We brainstorm to find a theme and the music for each routine.  It’s always a creative thing!  We want something exciting that will get the girls feeling energetic and hyped up”, says Amanda, Junior Product Manager for Marcelle® Skin Care.  There is no doubt that these girls are having fun while practicing their sport!

Marcelle® is very proud to support the Beaconsfield Synchro team for their participation in the XIII FINA World Masters Championship.  We wish them the best of luck!  From one athlete to another, two-time Olympic medalist Jennifer Heil sent the girls a word of encouragement.

For those less familiar with synchronized swimming, do you know what keeps the girls’ hair so sleek and shiny?  Knox Gelatin!

An evening with royalty is an event most of us will never have the chance to live.  Two-time Olympic medalist Jennifer Heil was invited to share the head table at last Monday’s Official Dinner in Toronto with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II; her husband Philip Duke of Edinburgh; Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen Harper; Chief of Defense Staff General Walt Natynczyk and his wife; former Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn’s wife Gerda; as well as Olympic Ice Dance Gold Medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.

“I will be telling my grandchildren about this incredible experience”, exclaims Jennifer.  Meeting royalty and sharing a dinner table with such dignitaries is certainly a chance the majority of us may only dream of.  How does one prepare for such an event?  “I went online and read about the protocol and proper etiquette”, explains Jenn.  It is suggested to curtsy and, if offered the hand, proceed to a short and light handshake.  “I certainly wanted to shake her hand”.  This moment was immortalized by cameras and will remain a most memorable moment for the freestyle skiing champion.

In Jennifer’s words, Her Majesty was “so real”.  We are used to seeing the Queen in a very formal context however; it was as though “she came to life through the conversation”.  During dinner, the Duke of Edinburgh asked the Olympic athletes about each of their sports and the monarch allowed her table guests to “get a glimpse of her personality.  It was neat to see how real she was through her interactions and dialogue”.  Jenn elaborates by mentioning that, at one point the Queen moved quickly and her tiara slightly slipped on her head.  She made a funny look as she graciously replaced the jeweled diadem.  “It was neat to see a hint of the person underneath the crown.  She seemed sweet and engaging”.

When asked what is more nerve-wrecking between competing on moguls or meeting Queen Elizabeth, the athlete does not hesitate one second to say that this week’s dinner did require some preparation and she was definitely nervous!  “I feel very lucky to have had such an amazing experience.  The picture of my greeting the Queen will be in a very special frame right next to the one I have of my high-fiving Prime Minister Harper at the Vancouver Olympics!”

The word that best sums the evening for Jenn is “dazzling”.  “From the overall feeling to the sparkling of her crown to the pearls and sequins that were forming maple leaf shapes on her outfit; I simply could not take my eyes off Her Majesty”.

Jennifer Heil makes history again!

Jenn took a few moments to tape videos while she was getting ready for a regal evening.  Her natural beauty was enhanced by Marcelle colours of course and the talented hands of hair and makeup artist Claudine Baltazar from Plutino Group Toronto.  We invite you to check her out as she gets ready to meet Queen Elizabeth II!  Special thanks to Claudine Baltazar and Roseanna Plutino, President of Plutino Group Toronto, for their collaboration.

As the new moguls queen, Jennifer Heil has given her career a trajectory opposite to that of her races: she started at the bottom, only to reach the very top of her sport. By winning her fifth Crystal Globe (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and of course 2010), the Albertan star has equaled the all-time record held by American skier Donna Weinbrecht, who also won the very first moguls Olympic gold in 1992.

But Jennifer’s overall résumé is now the most impressive in the history of women’s moguls, since she’s also won two Olympic medals (Gold in 2006, Silver this year) and two World Championships in 2005 and 2007 (plus two silver medals). An amazing performance that surpasses Weinbrecht’s legendary accomplishments, especially since she was 31 when she won her fifth Globe.

Jennifer is only 26. She has plenty of time to climb another mountain called World Cup Victories. Donna Weinbrecht has climbed on 99 podiums during her illustrious career, winning an incredible 60 times. Jenn currently has 50 podiums and 25 wins, but given her thirst for perfection and her love of ski, expect to see her radiant smile on the highest step more often than not.
